5 Tips to Improve Your Cardiovascular Health  Dr. Dinesh Sehgal  Exercise regularly – Start exercising gradually by including walking, biking, jogging, swimming or any additional movement in your routine.  A  recent study  showed using electric assist bicycles can provide benefits for your cardiovascular system, especially for people who had been sedentary. Eat a healthy diet – A heart healthy diet includes whole grains, fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy products, nuts and beans and vegetable oils. Limit sodas, sugar-sweetened beverages and sweets. Sleep for at least 7 hours a night Stop smoking and avoid second-hand smoke Monitor –    Get regular check-ups to monitor health conditions that affect your cardiovascular system and heart, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Part 2  |  What you can eat:  The fresher the better, as most fresh fruit and veg, as well as meats and seafood – do not contain the salty preservatives, deep fried oils or refined sugars that you should be avoiding. Can the soft drink (pardon the pun) and try some infused water, tea or coffee (in moderation). You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to make some changes that can improve your health.  Foods to watch and why :-  Salt:    Eating too much salt over time can increase your risk of high blood pressure which is a major risk factor for heart disease. Salt is found in almost every food we eat,  and in the average western diet, there is no need to add salt to food to get your intake. Salt is used for flavouring as a preservative, so  sauces, chips and packaged foods are often high in salt. Don't eat when you aren't hungry - Advice by Dr. Dinesh Sehgal ( Cardiologist ) "Don't eat when you aren't hungry. [Here are reasons you always feel hungry]. It sounds too simple but many people eat for other reasons like boredom or stress. Instead become a 'grazer.' It's better to nibble, and every once in a while gorge oneself on a big meal, rather than the old advice to eat three meals a day. Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do for your heart."
